|ZION HILL BAPTIST CHURCH SANCTUARY
Sometime during the year of our Lord 1868 the Holy Spirit spoke to the hearts of two or three of our forefathers inspiring them to
come together for the purpose of praising God for the blessings that were bestowed upon them. This information was passed
along from one of the oldest members Bro. Charlie Hayden who lived to be 102 years old departing this life in 1977.
The church started out meeting at the homes of each other. When the number grew large enough that they were ready to
organize they worked toward trying to build. They took their meager earnings and purchased a parcel of land. It was a struggle
but the Holy Ghost was upon them as they took on the challenge. No minutes were found until after the 1900’s which were still
very sketchy, but the first black Baptist church in this vicinity was erected and called Glasgow Junction Missionary Baptist Church
now known as Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
The first recorded Pastor was Reverend R.M. Edwards from 1922-1961. In 1966 the State
Highway Department purchased the original site of the church for the construction of
Interstate 65. The church then purchased the former Park City Colored Elementary School
and worshipped there until the fall of the year our present sanctuary was added and
completed. Rev. G.W. Thornton. Sr. was Pastor then and the building was dedicated on May
Down through the years Zion Hill has been wonderfully blessed and the further up the Kings
Highway we go, the more abundantly God showers down his blessings. Not only do we
worship and minister to the sick and shut-in but visit the jails and Job Corps Center. In 1998,
new homes were erected through a Land Development program sought after by then Pastor
Rev. M. E. Smyzer, Jr.
Zion Hill has always been a pillar in the community not just for the black families but for anyone who stands in need. God has
richly blessed us and kept us. Through much faith and work we strive to be all that God would have us to be. We are now under
the leadership of our current Pastor Rev. Kym Abner. He came to us with a vision of our growth spiritually as well as in souls
being saved. Pastor Abner has already implemented a Women’s Outreach program, Children’s church, a website and email for
the church as well as renovation of our kitchen and dining area.
